Some Scientists Use Models to Simulate Ecosystems
Since the late 1960s, ecologists have developed mathematical and other models that simulate ecosystems. Computer simulations can help scientists understand large and very complex systems(such as rivers, oceans, forests, grasslands, cities, and climates) that cannot be adequately studied and modeled in field and laboratory research. Scientists are learning a lot about how the earth works by feeding data into increasingly sophisticated models of the earth's systems and running them on supercomputer.
